It comes with different names like Kota, Sphahlo, iSkhambhani or bunny chow it all depends on which township you have visited. The Soweto Kota Festival is making a comeback this year and promises to bring you only the best combos. The festival will present the best of the local cuisine, from the Kota chefs who will showcase their cooking skills. This will be happening in Rockville at Elkah Soweto Cricket Oval on the 3rd and 4th September. For more on the festival, we chat to the founder Sidwell Tshingilane.
For those who don’t know, kota is a South African street food that is made from hollowing out a loaf of bread and filling it with something. Sometimes it is curry, and sometimes other ingredients. It can be hard to eat quickly, but once you get used to it, this can be as convenient as a wrap or pita.
